The Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka Approved by AKC

Moved to the the Toy Group

The Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka will move into the  Toy Group on 12.31.2025

The Bolonka Coat

Basics of the bolonka Coat

Bolonkas should be solid  in color. Any color but solid white is acceptable. Small amounts of white on chest and toes are permitted. Parti-colored, spotted, or merle are not accepted colors. They do have a lighter color known as creme that is often mistaken as white, however should have a yellow tone and not pink pigmented.  The nose and eye rims should match coat color.

Curls or wavy

Bolonka puppies sometimes do not have a lot of curl when they are young. Many do not get waves or curl until they have changed to adult coat. They can have Large curls or waves with an undercoat. The coat should not be straight.

Transitional coat

On average between the ages of 6mo and 12 months the Bolonka will change from a puppy coat to an adult coat. This is when keeping the coat clean and brushed at minimum every other day is important. A good quality shampoo with  non-paraben or waxes work best.

To blow dry or not

It is recommended by most breeders not to blow dry the coat, it will dry the skin and the coat will lose most of its natural oils.

Brushes/ combs

A nice pin brush and butter comb are recommended for good care of the coat, do not pull on tangles, work them out with your fingers. Also use a nice detangling spray or diluted conditioner to help remove the matting.

Ponytail

It is recommended to pull the hair up out of your Bolonkas eyes. Using a latex band not rubber [it will cut the hair]. The ponytail is to help prevent eye issues.

The Bolonka Head

The Head of the Bolonka

The head is one of the features of the Bolonka that make them different from other toys breeds.

Profile

The expression is sweet, alert & intelligent. The cheeks are slightly rounded. The skull is prominent and slightly rounded with a well defined stop. The muzzle is short, slightly more than 1/3 of the head and slightly tapers toward the nose. The nasal bridge is straight and wide at the base. The eyes are of medium size and set on the frontal plane.

The bite of the bolonka

The lips are tight, with edges that are black or similar to the coat color. Scissor bite is preferred; a level or slightly undershot are tolerated. A complete set of incisors and canines are desired.
